Longhorn Body Art (Tattoo) Class Action A $10 million class action lawsuit was commenced in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice against Longhorn Custom Body Art and Hugh Francis Towie, a tattoo studio operating in the City of Oshawa. The Region of Durham’s health department closed the studio, located at 12 Centre St. in Oshawa, on August 1, 2007 after launching an investigation into potential exposure to non-sterile equipment. It is alleged that the studio’s sterilization equipment was not operating properly or at all during the period of concern. The use of non-sterile equipment could lead to transmission of diseases like hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV. People who believe they may be affected are urged to take certain precautions, such as avoid sharing clippers, razors, toothbrushes and other personal items, and to use a condom during sexual activity, until evidence of transmission of infectious diseases can be ruled out. Kaleb Beaulieu is represented by Todd J. McCarthy and Sean A. Brown. “As many as 2,000 people in our community have been exposed to several deadly blood-borne diseases. This exposure should never have occurred and we are hopeful that this action will ensure that it never happens again,” says Mr. McCarthy. The lawsuit is commenced on behalf of all persons who received a tattoo or body piercing at the Longhorn Body Art studio between November 17, 2006 and August 1, 2007.
